My son is returning from a 1 year deployment in Afghanistan, so I am at Ft Campbell. My husband I are and eagerly awaiting his arrival. I look forward to seeing all of you again after my return to the store.

The past 28 years have been utterly amazing for me and all my "Needle Nook Fabrics Family"

Sorry for the delay in getting the class schedule posted. Typing (opps keyboarding) has been a challenge for me after minor wrist surgery. All is well, just cannot cut fabric for another week, but sewing is happening.
Just a reminder, that if you do not see a class that you would like or that the times are not working with your schedule, please give us a call so that we can possibly get a time/class that is better for you.

Note also the addition of another Kids Klass.. That Janet is having waaaayyy too much fun creating new challenges for our beginning sewists!!!!!!

I know, it has been a long time since I last posted.   The last half of September and all of October and thus far November has been extremely busy between teaching around the country and in the store.

"HAPPY THANKSGIVING" to all of you.   I have so very many things to be thankful for this year.   An awesome family (related and non-related "My Needle-Nookers"), GREAT Ladies that help me both in the store and while traveling, and the great opportunity to share my "LOVE" of sewing with so many terrific ladies.

Hopefully you are all busy with your Christmas sewing. We will be having a "Daily Special" from now until the end of November.   This Friday and Saturday we have a "Special Gift" with every purchase. Call in orders welcomed for our out of towners.

We are so excited!!!   We will be heading back up to the Bernina store in Overland Park, Ks on November 4, 5 & 6, 2011.   Contact information is under " Upcoming Workshops".

Janet and I had a great time last weekend with the Overland Park group making knit tops.   It was also fun to see a couple of ladies that had taken workshops with us previously that came by to "shop".

By popluar demand, we have just received more of the "Ruffled Knit". There is Black, White, Purple and a varigated Brown/Coral. They also sent me some new swatches that I need to get ordered.

New colors in Terry cloth are now available: Pink, Baby Blue, Mint & Yellow.
I see lots of baby towels to make in my future.   As some of you know, I am going to be a Grandma in early February. Monica and Ben are very excited.

Grace and Ruth are on the road to LA with a few stops to visit friends. Janet and I leave early Monday morning. We are looking forward to meeting new sewing friends and seeing others again.

Ruffled Knit

I must say that "I" should not laugh when taking pictures. This was the first picture, then we got to laughing, I took a second picture and
low and behold I shook the camera and it blurred. Judy has the most incredible smile, an I blurred it, so you get the see her little smile.

OK, now for the ruffled top. She had decided that it was going to be cut diagonal, them hubby stepped in and said "do it in a chevron"
so, long story short, her new top is done with a "chevron stripe look".
The back was cut with the ruffles going around, so at the front hem, she cut and attached a straight ruffle to the bottom.  She used her basic Kwik Sew 2900 pattern.

This is her second ruffled top. When she finished the first she said,
I love the top, but what a pain to work with. Janet has also worked with the ruffled fabric and she suggested that Judy try using a glue stick to secure the ruffles at the stitching line.   Judy's comment on the
second ruffled top " What a difference the glue made, this one was so much easier".

Fun Dresses

Using Burda Style magazine July 2011, style # 106 Theresa created this fun dress for her granddaughter. She used 1 yard of 60" wide fabric. It is a square with a 45* angle cut out of one corner and then a short seam stitched at the opposite side for the single side seam.

This dress was created using narrow elastic at the bodice to create the smocked top with a single seam. Quick, Easy and so comfortable. Both are great for the hot days we have been enduring.

4-H Sewing

This is 4 of the 6 sisters that sew with their grandmother. They all received Purple expect the striped hoodie, which was a difficult fabric for the design, but she did a great job.

Kami's tulip top and green skirt won her Reserve Grand Champion in the Intermediate division.

Kassie was Reserve Grand Champion in the Senior with her sister Jessica(not pictured) winning Grand Champion.

I am very proud of these girls as well as ALL of the other 4-H'ers that I have the pleasure of working with.

ITY PANEL FABRIC

I decided to take this panel and get a bit creative. Laid my basic Knit Top pattern on the bias to cut my front and back, then did the same with the sleeve leaving the points on each. I am in love with the results. I can now see a black or red pencil skirt in my future.

She was a guest teacher for the Wichita American Sewing
Guild last year and I was fortunate enough to spend a couple
of hours with her touring our city as well as introducing her to
Needle Nook Fabrics. A true sewing teacher,she added this
top fabric as well as a couple of others to her stash.

Although we no longer have this print, I just returned from the warehouse and found 10-12 new prints to add to the ones
already in stock. It is an ITY jersey knit.

Fun Summer Sewing

This is one of our 4-H sewist showing off her Summer fashion for this year.
Her top is made from a nylon/lycra textured activewear fabric and the cute capris are stretch twill. Bet she receives great reviews for this outfit.

Robin on the left and Stacey on the right show off the same fabric. It is an ITY jersey with ombre dots. Don't they both look fabulous!!!!

KIDS KAMP 2011

Hey Kids and Parents:

Janet is planning TWO fun Kids Kamps this summer. Kids Kamp I is the same as that offered last year and will be held July 11 - 15 from 10am - 3 pm. Kids Kamp II will be new, all about textiles and needle arts and will be held July 18 - 25 from 10am - 3pm.

Lots of fun activities have been planned.
Kamp class size is limited to 4 students (8 years or older) so call soon to reserve your seat.

Cost $125.00 for the Kamp and $35.00 for the kit fee. Total $160.00
the cost of the Kamp covers EVERYTHING you will need. Just show up on time and bring your sack lunch. Janet will furnish snacks and plenty of cold drinking water.

There is no requirement to take Kamp I before Kamp II. Just remember class size is limited.

KIDS KAMP I
Monday: Learn hand sewing skills including a few embroidery stitches, Ribbon Ruching and Needle Felting. Janet has just purchased an Embellishment (Felting) machine that we will be using. You will complete a very special decorated pin cushion.

Tuesday: Find out how a sewing machine works. See if you can learn the names of several important parts of the machine. Learn some simple maintenance techniques needed to care for a sewing machine. Build confidence sewing designs on paper.

Wednesday: Use measuring and marking techniques sewing a Swimsuit Cover-up. Embellish with rick rack or ribbon. (Be measured and pick your fabric for Thursday's T-Shirt and Fridays Shorts).

Thursday: Learn iron safety and apply iron on interfacing. Find out when and where to use interfacing. Stitch up a sleeveless T-shirt with a double needle hem.

Friday: Sew up a pair of shorts to complete your outfit. Sew in a waist casing and run the elastic through the casing with a big safety pin. Careful, don't lose the other end of the elastic. Try on your new outfit and model it for the camera so that your picture can be put on the Needle Nook Fabrics blogspot.

KIDS KAMP II
Monday: We will make drop spindles and talk about Wool, where is comes from and how it is used. We will see and feel wool in various forms.

Tuesday:
We will be cleaning and washing some raw (just sheared) wool. Dye wool fibers with non-toxic dyes. Bet you will be surprised at what we are using. Learn Carding and Spinning techniques.

Wednesday. Continue Carding and Spinning and begin our Pin Weaving using the yarns we have spun as well as other yarns and things Janet will furnish.

Thursday: Work on the Pin Weaving.

Friday: Finish the Pin Weaving and use it as the focal point on a project that is to be determined.

Olympia ASG Workshops

This morning at 12:10am, my Daddy, aka Ray Phillips went to heaven. At 90 yrs, 3 months and 14 days this world was truly blessed. Many of you were fortunate to have him sharpen your scissors. I was greatful when he taught me his wonderful techniques so that I can continue that service. He will be greatly missed by Mom, my brothers, 7 grandkids and 12 great-grandkids.

Fun morning with my great-niece and her mother picking out fabric for this years swimsuit. The choices are on the counter behind my left shoulder. Some off the shelves and some from the scrap box. Pattern choices are Kwik Sew 3609 & 3416 for the tops and 3239 view D for the bottoms.
Some of the fabrics are coordinating, so she will end up with a combination of 5 different looks. Now to get busy drafting patterns and getting them completed.

Raincoat class yesterday and today was a great success. Here is the coat that I made using Ultrex, which is waterproof/windproof. Pattern did not call for lining, but I do not like the coating on the fabric next to my skin, so I lined mine with a Dazzle Tricot Mesh in teal.

Kid's Klass - Reversible Skirt

Janet is offering a REVERSIBLE SKIRT KLASS for girls aged 8 and older during Wichita School's SPRING BREAK. Klasses will be offered Wednesday March 23 and Thursday March 24 from 10:00 AM until 2:30 PM. These are two separate one day klasses. Please bring a sack lunch as a 30 minute lunch break is planned. Sewing experience or a previous class is required.

Cost is $25 for the klass. You will need to come in one week prior to pay klass fee and purchase your fabrics, elastic and thread. Fabrics will need to be pre-washed.
Klass will be cancelled if not filled to a minimum of 3 girls.

Skills to learn and/or practice will be:
Measuring
Math
Rotory Cutting (Safety glove furnished)
Machine Sewing
Pressing
Adding a pocket
Inserting elastic
Hemming

You may bring your own sewing machine or use one of ours. Janet has scissors, purple pens, pin cushions/pins and rulers so you needn't bring them.

We have added a Reversible Vest class using Kwik Sew 3846 and a Raincoat/Windbreaker using Kwik Sew 3622. We have tried to schedule classes at a variety of times and days. We look forward to seeing everyone for our Annual Anniversary/Super Bowl Sunday Sale.   Although I will not be in the store, I will be with each of you vicariously.

Some of you may be wondering why the Adult Sewing 101 has not been scheduled lately. I have been teaching several Mom and Daughter classes by request. Children as young as 8 can take this class as long as they have an interest and get plenty of rest each night before class. A sewing machine is not required. Because the scheduled classes did not fill sufficiently (due to no shows and cancelations) I am changing the way I charge for the class. One person private class will be $100. Two persons will be $120, mom/grandma and child, two children or adults. Class of three or more will be $60 per student. This class runs 8-10 hours, can be completed in one long day of sewing by adults. Children must take in 3 sessions. Class also includes all fabric samples, thread, workbook and precut fabric for a large square bottomed tote that is the final project using many of the techniques that have been learned in the earlier sessions.

I am also going to offer Sewing with Janet. These will be days that I will be at the shop, available to sew with you and teach a new technique or two or just answer your questions about your machine. One suggestion that I have already received is "Twin Needles", how to use them, how to make ribbing from fleece using a twin needle, and use in heirloom sewing. This will be a time for you to bring in your projects and questions. Cost will be $25 for the day.

New Casual Blouse

Just so you know that I do not always sew with knit fabrics. I made this blouse teaching a new class; Casual Blouse/Flannel Shirt. We had great fun, but it did take us a bit longer than I anticpated. We used Kwik Sew 3555 and changed the hemline from shirttail to straight with side slits.
I really plan on wearing this more as a jacket than a blouse.
I used a medium weight Poplin, 97% cotton/ 3% spandex (yes it does have a bit of stretch for comfort).

Kwik Sew 3756 that I wore for Thanksgiving. I compared it to my TNT KS 2900, which is a medium and ended up using a size large. I raised the neckline 2". Next time I will narrow the neckline about 3/4" on each side, which will also raise the back 3/4". Love the textured Designer Knit.

The Middle Eastern Cultural Dance Assoc had a fund raising event on Nov 13. It was a great evening with a variety of dancers presented by several local groups. What an amazing group of talent !!!! The event was to help support the non-profit association "Pets in Crisis". In additions to the dancers they had a "Bra" contest.... my kind of contest !!! Below our pictures of the entries. Adult Serger 101 and Adult Sewing 101

Christmas is just around the corner and Janet is offering an Adult Serger 101 on Dec. 4, 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM. Cost is $30 for the class and fabric choice is up to you. We will be making kids pajamas and pillowcases, perfect for that last little gift. If you are thinking about a serger or have one you just don't utilize, this is an opportunity to find out how much fun it can be. We will be using ribbing on the neck, wrist and ankle of the pjs. Janet's grandchildren love the pillow cases she has made for them. They have flannel and cotton woven pillowcases that match their bedrooms or their latest "favorite" character. When you sign up for the class you will be given the fabric requirements. You may need to pre-launder your fabrics so plan ahead.

Janet is also adding an Adult Sewing 101 due to recent demand. There is one opening for this class. The class will be Thursday, Dec. 9, 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM. Cost is $30 for the class and $15 for the kit or a total of $45. All you need to bring is your own sewing machine with book, tools and accessories. If you haven't used your machine in years or are new to sewing come in and learn about your machine, and how to take care of it so it will cooperate with you. We will also be learning about seams, curves, corners, gathers, and many other simple but important techniques in sewing. We will finish off the day by creating a tote bag that is large and strong enough to carry your future projects to class.

Little sister Claire enjoys modeling big brother Seth's new Darth Vadar Cape. Gramma thinks it will work well for both children as a magician, wizard, opera cape, Wicked Witch of the West (add a tall pointed hat), Dracula and of couse Darth Vadar.
Gramma Janet made it out of black tricot. Wow it was easy and will last for years. Not only that the only edge finishing done was on the front of the hood to add stability and the tie was used to bind the neck line to make it smooth against little necks and for reinforcement. It took longer to cut it out than to sew it. Can't you see red for Little Red Riding Hood or white or pink for the fairy princess in your life.

Have you seen our new infant prints? They are a 100% Cotton Interlocks $8.50 yard and 60" wide. Here's a picture of the Kwik Sew sleeper gown I (Grace) made the other day for my cousin. I made two size 0-3 month and used 1 1/3 yd. a bit less than 1 yd of foldover elastic for the neck and 16" of elastic in the bottom. Supper easy project! And just look at all the choices of prints you have!!

Janet is getting ready to offer a Serging 101 Pillowcase class for kids so she looked over the sale fabrics and put together a couple of body pillow cases for Christmas gifts. They turned out so nice she is going to go buy herself a body pillow and make some more. These giant pillowcases cost just under $9 and took about 20 minutes to make. Not bad for a luscious, quick and simple Christmas gift.
Come on in and give them a feel. They are super scrumptious!

New ITY Jersy Knits

Hey guys this is Grace, just wanted to let you know about some of the new ITY Jersey Knits that just arrived. Several Black and Whites and a few wild and crazy prints!

They are Poly/Lycra blend 58"-60" wide and $7.25 per yd.

Below are some pictures and descriptions:

I think this one is the all around favorite of us Needle Nookers. A black background with small white polka-dots on one side that grow so big that the black background turns into little black squares on the other side!

This one is much like the one above but the dots don't get quite as big and they're actually a light ivory with black background.

More black and white prints! The one on the left is white circles that are over lapped and can look like flowers or fish scales depending on your imagination! And the one on the right is a white background with black lines running every which way.

Janet is now offering a new class called "SEWING 101". If you are new to sewing or "used to" sew and have not done so in years, this is the class for you. This is a very basic class.
You will learn:
Parts of the machine
How to clean, oil and adjust the machine
Sew curves and corners
Grading and Clipping curves
Several types of seams
Three methods to gather
Plus numerous other techniques.

Finally, apply all you have learned by sewing a square bottomed bag with flapped pocket and wrap around straps.

NEW SILK JERSEY AND MORE

We are almost packed and ready for the American Sewing Guild Annual Conference in Atlanta, Aug 5 - 8. But we still have many new and interesting fabrics available right here in the store. The remnant table is full and many of the fabrics are over 1 yard, so come in and take a look.
Today we received 2 different prints in Silk Jersey. They are 54" wide and $12 yd. They are so gorgeous and very soft. I can not wait to make a new garment.

Janet has added a new line of Melissa & Doug's fashion toys for all our younger fashion designers. There are wooden lacing sets, magnetic dress up play sets and even a simple wooden puzzle for our very youngest fashionistas. Keep these toyes in mind for quiet activities while Mom/Grandma are sewing, and for birthdays or Christmas. We have a catalog of all the Melissa and Doug sturdy wooden toys and can order for you anytime. You will find the toys up by the children's play area.

KIDS KAMP GREAT SUCCESS !!!!

We had a great time during the first Needle Nook Kids Kamp. The girls had fun learning and creating. All the T-shirts came out a little large and needed some minor alterations by Janet, but after basting the shorts together and then sewing them; all the shorts fit perfectly.

We did learn that the pin cushions need to have a base inside them to keep the pins from poking all the way through. OUCH !!!!!

Janet is looking forward to the next session and planning a Kids Kamp 2. Next summer we will offer Kids Kamp 1 (same as this year) and Kids Kamp 2 which will be based on needle felting and dyeing wool and other fibers with Kool-Aid. Janet is also working on a future serging class for kids.

Hey Kids and Parents:

Janet is planning a fun Kid's Kamp for this summer.
Monday thru Friday, June 14-18.
Time will be 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Bring a sack lunch.

Lots of fun activities have been planned.
Class size is limited to 4 students (8 years or older) so call
soon to reserve your seat.
Cost $ 125.00 for the class and $35.00 for the kit fee.
Total $160.00.
The cost of the Kamp covers EVERYTHING you will need.
Just show up on time and bring your sack lunch. Janet will
furnish snacks and plenty of cold drinking water.

Monday: Learn hand sewing skills including a few embroidery
stitches, Ribbon Ruching, and needle felting. Janet has just
purchased an Embellishment (Felting) machine that we
will be using. You will complete a very special decorated pin
cushion.

Tuesday: Find out how a sewing machine works. See if you
can learn the names of several important parts of the machine.
Build confidence sewing designs on paper.

Wednesday: Use measuring and marking techniques sewing a
Swim Suit Cover-up. Embellish with rick rack (Be measured and
pick your fabric for Thursday's T-Shirt and Friday's Shorts).

Thursday: Learn iron safety and apply iron on interfacing. Find
out when and where to use interfacing. Stitch up a sleeveless
T-Shirt with a double needle hem. If time permits make a ribbon
weaving embellishment for your shirt.

Friday: Sew up a pair of shorts to complete your outfit. Sew in a
waist casing and run elastic through the casing with a big safety
pin. Careful, don't lose the other end of the elastic. Try on your
new outfit and model it for the camera so that your picture can
be posted on the Needle Nook blogsite.

I have ordered some more new Spring fabrics. They will be arriving in the store on Tuesday. As you may or may not know, once they are in the store even if they are not in the racks, they are available via the "back room".

Janet and I are heading to LA ASG and Fresno ASG for Bra Workshops, but the most exciting part of the trip will be a side trip to Las Vegas for the International Textile Show. I was extremely excited that the timing has worked out for us to attend. I am hopeful of finding new sources for fabrics and findings. Let me know if you are looking for a particular type of stretch fabric.

With the cold weather NNF has been quiet, but that is okay. I have been able to make myself a sweatsuit. I used our new 100% cotton sweatshirt fleece. I did not want a plain sweatshirt so I chose to customize Burda pattern 7598 from a dress to my own sweatshirt! I use my TNT(tried & true) elastic waist slacks pattern.

I know it is a bit early to be thinking about spring, but I had the chance to get some really nice spring/summer stripes. They are 58"-60" wide. The first picture is 100% cotton jersey knits @ $4.50yd and the second picture is 88%Poly/12%Lycra ITY jersey knits@ $5.00yd. I am looking forward to making some new tops turning the stripes in different directions, i.e. diagonal or chevron.

Fall has finally arrived and that means that new garments
will be needed soon. I took a flying low (driving quickly) trip
to several warehouses on Friday. Well, 75 new bolts of fabric
loaded in my trusty van are now being placed
carefully on the racks.

BACK FROM BUYING LACES

Just wanted to let you all know that hubby and I just returned tonight from a trip to North Carolina. I found a store going out of business and was able to get lots of new laces and a few new tricot colors.

It will be a week or so before I can get through all of them and put out into the tables.

Hubby had already unloaded a few bags, but thought it would be fun for you to see the vanload.

ASG Conference is Next Week and More

We are really looking forward
to ASG conference this year in
Albuquerque. It is also a treat
to see sewing friends again and
meet new sewist.

NEW STRETCH WOVENS:

OK: this is a bit late, but the computer has been *##@*#&*#&
lately. Anyway, here are the newest stretch wovens. The first
two prints below are 50% silk/45%cotton/5% lycra, the
remaining are 97%cotton/3%lycra.
